Col du Glandon was built and opened in 1898, and in 1912 was connected to Croix de Fer (must-do if you do Col du Glandon). In 1947 it was first used for the Tour de France cycling race, although it has never been a stage finish. Most commonly the Tour de France climbs Col du Glandon before finishing at Alpe D’Huez.
From La Chambre, there are KM stones every KM and the first few KM are flat before the gradient starts to increase. Climbing up the valley following the Glandon river, past Église Saint Colomban (super pretty church dominating the view) in Saint Colomban des Villards it’s not until 17km that the view/climb really comes alive. A hairpin out of the trees with the road pointing straight towards the towering mountains. With every KM the view increases until you arrive at the piece de resistance, a beautiful and incredibly engineered section of hairpin bends. Pressed against the mountain with a huge waterfall going beneath the road you will be in Nirvana. This 2km section makes the previous 20km worth it.
A classic climb, with the last few Kilometers incredibly special. Definitely combine with Croix De Fer.
Stats: 1479m of ascent in 22.7km. Average gradient of 7.1%. Elevation: 1,924 m (6,312 ft)
